The year was 1979, and the album Broader than Broadway was just released. Barrington
Levy, aka the singer with the canary voice had the world locked and
listening to his every note.
It’s hard to believe, but Barrington began his recording
career at the age of 14 when he teamed with his cousin in 1976 to form the band
the Mighty Multitude. That experience
yielded the song “My Black Girl” and armed the singer with enough confidence to
know, music is where he is destined to be.
Fast forward to 1979, and we have the album Broader than
Broadway. Track 12 is one of the many
chunes that holds our attention. “You Have Caught Me” is simplistic in
riddim delivery, making it the perfect canvass for Barrington to paint the most
beautiful portrait … a song of love!
The canary voice sings “you have caught me baby / you have
caught me / and I’m falling in Love with You / so there ain’t nothing else /
for you to do / but to love me like I love you…” Kaboom!
This classic chune still gets fans of all age groups even to
this day. Hard to believe it’s 32 years
old and gets a huge forward every time it’s played.
Some of the people who helped bring Levy’s voice to
prominence include Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes,
and his work with Roots Radics
band. Add to that the fans whom he was
performing for in the Dancehalls from such a young age. Early hits, that bring back special memories
for fans are “Murderer,” “Broader Than Broadway” and “Collie Weed.”
