Michie Mee's 'Bahdgyal Revenge!'

Michie ‘BahdGyal’ Mee, Canada’s Queen of Hip Hop, has graced us with an 18-track album entitled ‘BahdGyals Revenge’ and this is a body of work you must hear.

Michie’s greatness has always been her pen, when it meets paper, when it meets the recording booth, when it meets the dopest beats which leads to this album and the world stage.  Gifting us with Hip Hop interlaced with Dancehall and Reggae as well as Rock n’ Roll (track 15 “What You Talkin’ Bout”), Michie’s revenge is the absolute statement that Hip Hop is not dead.  No disrespect to Rappers, Trappers and those in between.

The Queen’s voice comes after the announcement by Chuck D (track 1 “Intro”) who confirms Michie’s genres of Hip Hop, Reggae and Rock n’ Roll.  Mich takes a moment to lyrically lay the foundation of how she arrived where she is (track 2 “Forgot About Mich”).  After that, it is straight cruise control on her sonic highway.

“Made It” featuring Tonya P pays homage to Michie’s hometown of Toronto, and “BahdGyal Bubble” brings out the hardcore attitude of Dancehall that tumps through the psyche of anyone who thinks that we cannot throw-down north of the border.  Remember, Toronto has the largest Jamaican population outside of New York and Michie is proud to represent that.

Bringing her roots from Jamaica to the fore, “Whey Mee Get It From” honors the Mothers before her.  Artists such as Sister Nancy, Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Lady G, Marcia Griffiths, Spice Official, Carla Marshall and Sister Carole paved part of the road Michie has traveled.  Paying respect to these Ladies and more shows the level of respect the BahdGyal has for fellow Queens in Reggae and Dancehall.

Where there is a Queen, you will find a King which makes me appreciate the song “Love.”  The album version is a 2020 upgrade from the original acoustic version released in 2011 (don’t get it wrong, both versions are straight fire).  Lindo P perfectly compliments Michie’s flow who shows a vulnerable side of women – the ones who on rare occasions admit to wanting and needing love.  If black love needed a sound, this song is it.

The album ends with “Made It” (Remix) featuring Kenny Cee.  Although Michie performs this song with Tonya P (track 7), this version ends with heavy elements of Soul that allows Kenny’s lyrics to shine like the beacon of light they are intended to be … yes life will get tough and throw curves but we have to be strong and survive.  That is Michie’s ‘revenge;’ she is strong, and she survived.  Peep her album cover art ... see that single rose growing through the concrete!

Wait ‘til you see what comes next!

With much anticipation, Best of the Best Music Concert (BOTB) has made their first announcement for their 13th annual staging. The premiere Caribbean summer concert returns to Bayfront Park, in Miami Florida. The promoters of Best of the Best Concert are pleased to announce a cast of some of Reggae / Dancehall and Soca most electrifying artists for this year staging. Set to be held on Sunday May 26th, 2019 organizers have put together a historic line up paying tribute to 90s dancehall.

“Every year we look to celebrate Caribbean music and this year is no different. We decided to carve out an era, which so many of us love and reminisce on all the time. This era was ground breaking for dancehall and reggae music in many ways and that is the 90s era. We had some of our biggest artist in dancehall during the 90s era many of them still reign today. Therefore, we decided to pay homage to 90s dancehall, with some of the hit makers of them time. Not to mention for the first time in America The Emperor Shabba Ranks and Don DaDa Super Cat will be sharing the same stage in the United States” says Steve ‘Jabba’ Beckford co-promoter of Best of the Best.

As one of the premier concerts for dancehall and reggae music outside of Jamaica, and celebrating their 13th anniversary, on Monday March 25th Best of the Best Music Concert made their first artist line up announcement. The lineup reflects a 90s theme with some of the newest sensation in dancehall like Noah Powa who had a stellar 2018. Noah Powa, who for many is known as a selector has embarked on a musical career, which is garnering a new fanbase with his relatable hits like, ‘Keep the Same Energy’, ‘Feel it’ and his recent collaboration with Grammy Award winner Shaggy ‘Money Up’.  Performing on the Best of the Best stage as an artist for the first time Noah Powa is definitely pleased with his career and acknowledgement by the promoters and fans. “I have received a tremendous outpour of love and excitement from my fans since the announcement, and persons are messaging me letting me know they are looking forward to see my performance. It’s a great feeling to know the work is finally paying off and I will be one of the acts on this mega stage show” says Noah Powa.

Confirmed are Shabba Ranks, Super Cat, Bushman, Frisco Kid, General Degree, General B and Round Head, all artist have mega hits and anthems from the 90s, which brings forth an enjoyable recollection of the past when their songs are played or performed. The rareness of having all these acts on one concert bill, is something many fans are excited about and looking forward to. “I recall living in Jamaica during the 90s and the stage show vibes were always so energetic and full of entertainment. An artist like Frisco Kid, who is still one of my favorite artist from that era, had so many hits from he enter the stage, I am looking forward to this show. Not to mention the Emperor and the Don DaDa Supercat on the same stage, history” says Alecia McKintosh of Tampa, Florida.

“Also a remarkable year for Soca music we had to book one of the three (3) road march winners of this year’s Trinidad carnival, Skinny Fabulous out of St Vincent, with the big bad song Famalaay” says Steven ‘Jabba’ Beckford.

With another artist lineup slated for late April, Best of the Best promoters are pleased with the initial response to their announcement.  “For the past few months the Best of the Best office has received numerous emails and messages from patrons, many of whom purchased their early bird tickets without even knowing the lineup. Upon the release of the lineup we have definitely seen and increase in ticket sales and social media buzz, surrounding this show” says publicist for Best of the Best Ronnie Tomlinson.

A Return to 2005 with Sizzla Kalonji

As today is Friday, I’m going to Flashback  to July 16th, 2005 when Sizzla Kalonji released his album ‘They Ain’t Gonna See Us Fall.’

The significance of this album lies in the title track which became an anthem for every suffering and struggling person faced with hardship.  From Jamaica Avenue in Queens, New York, to Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto, Canada, to every dance hall across Europe, and every lawn in the Caribbean, this song was #1.

Sizzla articulated the inner cry of people worldwide who refused to quit when adversaries wanted to see them fall.  The chorus is simplistic but powerful (“they ain’t gonna see us fall”), as is the 2nd verse which says in part “pray unto the most high he help me / I want to see all my people living wealthy / take care of yourself and be healthy / go to Mount Zion that’s where your blessings be….”  The operative word is ‘pray.’

Additional classic cuts on the album include “People Need Love,” “Knowing Each Other” and “Stop Fighting.”

About this album:

‘Ain’t Gonna See Us Fall’ is a raw testimony from one of Regga’e most influential artists on the issues and controversies he’s personally faced.  The statement is pieced together through various Jamaican singles (some lesser known outside of Jamaica) that served as a schannel for the artist to vent.  The album showcases the prolific, biting verses of Sizzla Kalonji as he speaks to local criticism, his adoration of females and his fiercely independent sometimes eccentric philosophies on life.  Sizzla blends truth and Rasta wisdom with hardcore lyrics over a variety of riddims.  The album makes good examples of why Sizzla’s influence looms large in Reggae and expanding among the Hip Hop nation.

Primary producer on the album is Free Willy.

When Chatta Takes the Mic, Clear Off Dutty Heart!

She has been named Best Female Dancehall Artist on numerous occasions, her music has been a mainstay on radio since the release of her first album Speed of Consciousness in 2004, and she is on one if the few females who know the art of ‘chatting’ on the microphone.  I’m talking about the one and only Chatta from Toronto, Canada.

Stepping on to the international stage, Chatta makes her debut to this international network of DJs and music ambassadors with her single “Clear Off Dutty Heart.”  Produced by Good Good Productions (Written by Chatta for Chatta Ragga National Productions), this chune is a must play in every Dancehall segment alongside Beenie Man, Mavado, Konshens and the others on the riddim.

The artist Sing-jays:  “dem nah reach nowhere / dem nah reach nowhere / till dem badmind clear / dem badmind clear / roun a heathen / roun a she-then / woulda sick yuh friendship inna quicksand / dem ah enemy / no we nuh heed dem / dem ah waste time fih me pree dem….”  Kaboom!

If you’re at a live event, listening to the radio or looking for a new mixtape, make sure this chune is included so you can sing the punchline ‘dem nah reach nowhere’ as Chatta speaks for the masses who know that dutty badmind can never prosper.

There is no doubt that this Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend will be one of the most musically memorable moments of the decade in the New York Tri-State area!

On Saturday, November 28, 2015, Caribbean entertainment specialists Irish and Chin, in conjunction with Irie Jam Radio, will present David “Ram Jam” Rodigan and Barrington “Barry G” Gordon’s 30thAnniversary at the plush Resorts World Casino in Queens, New York.  Sponsored by Western Union, the event commemorates the 30thAnniversary of the legendary David Rodigan and Barry G’s famed on-air sound clashes.

Two of the best to ever do it will deliver an unforgettable evening of divine Reggae music, fun and slice of an unprecedented era in Jamaican music and culture. As U.S. appearances from David Rodigan and Barry G are rare, there is overwhelming momentum for the 30th Anniversary and endorsement from the overall Caribbean market. Moreover, it’s been nearly 4 years since David Rodigan last performed in the U.S. and just as long for Barry G.

Both masters of their craft, the pioneering DJs brought sound clash to radio via a series of historical on-air clashes in 1985. Prior to this, sound clash, a cornerstone of Jamaican music and culture, was reserved for lawns and venues. The two wowed scores of listeners and captivated the island with their on-air sparring, making history all-the-while. The clashes were a phenomenon, officially locking down Rodigan’s Jamaican fan base. Technically, David Rodigan is one of the first “non-Jamaican” selectors to be whole-heartedly embraced by Reggae music fans. At the time of the clashes, David Rodigan was a well-respected radio personality on UK’s Capitol Radio, while the uber-talented Barry G was on Jamaica’s famed JBC Radio.

“Jamaica has a rich music culture with sound clash as it’s mainstay,” says Garfield “Chin” Bourne of Irish and Chin. “As a promoter deeply vested in sound clash, I couldn’t think of a greater way to pay tribute to this phenomenon, while celebrating icons David Rodigan and Barry G, who have had an immeasurable impact and influence on the culture.”

“We will ensure that attendees have a night they will never forget, as they take a trip down memory lane with entertainment from legends,” adds Garfield “Chin” Bourne.

Adding to the already buzzing combo of the David Rodigan and Barry G reunion, is music from top Stone Love selector Rory. Without question, Rory will capitalize on his well channeled years of experience and music knowledge to entertain the massive crowd. Ninja of Mighty Crown will bring fans from the past to the present with an impressive array of selections. The highly anticipated night will be musically balanced, offering all in attendance a night to remember.

How Young Hawk Got His Sound Clash Wings!

Canada Cup Clash Opens The 2015 Sound Clash Season

Photography / Videographer:  Father Matic from Illmatic Sound

Sound Clash season officially began in Toronto on Saturday September 19th, 2015 with the Canada Cup Clash.

Hosted by Michael Moore of Michael Moore Entertainment, this Clash saw 4 Sounds represent 4 countries for the coveted favor of the crowd.

Warrior Sound with Selecta Matthias played first representing Germany and played solid rounds.  Making it clear that his dubs were cut with creativity (salute for the Beres Hammond “What One Dub Can Do Dubplate”) and not cut like everyone else’s, the young yute from  the land of Heineken gave a solid overall performance, and was only eliminated from the Clash because of bias.  Please note, out of all the Sounds, and under the Sound Clash rules, Warrior Sound was most deserving to win.

Steppa Choice, playing 2 and representing Jamaica had the crowd excited from Dubplate 1 to Dubplate done.  Opening their round with Sanchez back to back:  “Amazing Grace” and “Praise Him,” the MC’s speech connected both chunes and had the crowd eating out of their hands.  By the time they finished their 15 minute round with Chronixx’s “Start a Fyah,” it was clear they meant business, and were ready for war.

King Attarney played for Canada and drew 3.  Despite technical difficulties, this sound if nothing else showed their fierce determination, and their tenacious quest for the coveted title of their home country.  Their Dubplate strength is the reason why they have a seat at an international competitors table.  Beginning their round with Tarrus Riley’s “Never Leave I,” it was clear that eliminating this Sound would be a challenge for the other 3 Sounds.

Fate is the reason why Young Hawk, representing the United States drew #4!  It was simply in the cards that the Hawk would FINALLY get his wings and fly.  Finally, because this is the Sounds first win on Canadian soil … totally unexpected.  I predicted that Young Hawk would lose this Clash based on past performances, but what has surprised me is how much he’s learned and applied to his performance style in the past 2.5 years.

His first round didn’t gel for me, but did make an impact on the knowledgeable Canadian audience.  What did stick for me were rounds 2, 3, and 4!  His performance was so on point, and distant from past performances, that the audience had no choice but to cheer for the young bird who was finally learning to fly right in front of out eyes – and fly he did.

Congrats to Young Hawk.  By no means is he ready to compete on the World Clash stage, but his Canada Cup Clash win is a good qualifier to let the world know that his training camp regiment is paying off.  Fly Young Hawk – and don’t forget Canada in your travels!

Most Played Artists:

1.       Tarrus Riley
2.      Lindo P (in attendance at the Clash)
3.      Taranchyla (artist and Selector from Poison Dart Sound)
4.      Chronixx
5.      Capleton
6.      Exco Levi

Ready for Another Round?!

Summertime is here, and the living is HOTTT and good, and one artist who’s celebrating the good life is Toronto’s own JLogix.  As a matter of fact life is so good for the artist, he’s asking for “Another Round!”

Produced by Real Links Productions (Fyah Fashion and Jeff De Master), the GTA Swing Riddim hears Logix open up in the recording booth about a different outlook on life – how about we celebrate what we have no matter how great or how small.  Take it a step further, Logix sing-jays “we have to give thanks / one bottle fih dih crosses dem / and one fih dih one dem weh nuh like we / ah yes / and one fih dih hypocrite blood sucker dem weh ah do tings fih spite we / ah bwoy / one fih dih enemy we fear we / one fih dih fren dem weh gear we / time fih buss a big bokkle fih dih one who love and dem cheer we….”

Oh Yes.  We are celebrating everything!

We’ve heard so much about badmind people and what badmind is doing that people have forgotten the many other reasons to celebrate, and Logix hands it to them on a platter.  So let me ask, are you going 1 round or 2?!  That’s how we do it in the GTA aka The 6 – we swing it!

Radio ready; mixtape ready; Sound System ready … It’s JLogix and the chune “Another Round.”  I’m about to meet up with the artist now; next rounds on me!

Too Many Fans for Gage in Trinidad & Tobago – Police Called – Party Shut Down!

Summer Splash 2015 featuring Dancehall Star Gage was supposed to be the official kickoff to the summer season in for students in San Fernando, Trinidad & Tobago but instead became pandemonium or fan-demounium resulting in the Police shutting down the event before it could begin.

Scheduled to perform at the Creative Arts Center on Circular Road in San Fernando on
Saturday June 20th, Gage was contracted by Fire House Promotions to perform for his audience of 500 students, but instead as many as 5,000 people showed up from all over the island.  “It was crazy” said Gage, “when we arrived there were so many fans screaming my name outside that we couldn’t get inside.  It was crazy.”

The Star, whose recent hit songs include “Kitty Kat,” “Put it Yasso,” and “Culu Culu” is known to have millions of fans around the world and across the Caribbean, with a particular concentration in Trinidad.  This performance is the 3rd time the artist has performed there for the year with each show selling out.

Overwhelmed by the chaos created by the star, San Fernando Police were called in to bring the excessive crowd under control.  Realizing there were too many fans present, the Police department erred on the side of caution and shut down the event before it could begin.  One patron, Dee Dee said “too many people showed up to see Gage and the thing got out of control.”  Not one to disappoint his fans, Gage took photos with fans and promised to return when the promoter rescheduled the show.

No one was injured but the ambulance was called for the promoter who passed out.

Gage returned to Jamaica on Monday June 22nd, 2015; he artist will perform at Reggae Sumfest on Dancehall Night, Thursday July 16th, 2015 in Montego Bay at Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex.

MaddSpider Productions Starts 2015 in a Sunshine State!

MaddSpider Productions begins 2015 with the release of their new riddim, Sunshine State which features performances from established Dancehall artists including a surprise feature from the hit duo Born Jamericans – Notch (Horman Howell) and Edley Shine (Edley Payne).

Purposely playing on the expression Sunshine State, both Jermaine ‘Froggy’ Lawrence and Ashanti ‘Taranchyla’ Reid named the riddim to give light to the fact that there are several positives to Dancehall despite some of the negatives we hear in the news.  They also pay homage to the state they live in, Florida, which is often referred to as the Sunshine State.  “Coming from Florida, we get a lot of sunshine and a lot of energy from the huge Caribbean population here.  We also have a lot of talent that is based here, so calling the riddim Sunshine State made sense because it’s everything we are!”

The 12 track riddim compilation features performances from Delly Ranx, T.O.K., Ce’Cile, Wayne Wonder and more and was recorded in Orlando, Florida and in Kingston, Jamaica.  Using modern music elements and borrowing slightly from the EDM genre, the riddim stands out as its BPM is at 78 which is very unusual for productions today.  Most fall in the 90 to 100 BPM range.  “Slowing down the riddim was important to us because it allows each artists performance to resonate with listeners.  When the BPM is slower, the vocals are more clear” said Froggy MaddSquad, one half of Madd Spider Productions.

Dancehall’s badgyal, Ce’Cile recorded the song “It’s Yours” on the riddim and said “the moment I finished recording my song, I told my manager and Froggy that this is going to be a hit for me.  They agree and so do a few trusted DJs I’ve allowed to hear it!”

Making its debut via ZJ Liquid on Zip FM, the feedback was immediate and good.  “The listeners like the riddim and like that it stands out from all the other riddims being produced.  It’s Dancehall and it’s crossover so it works for everyone.”

The Sunshine State Riddim was released on iTunes on February 10th, 2015 via this link:  https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/sunshine-state-riddim/id958343810

What If Busy Signal Never Did What He's Done?!

If you’re subscribed to Busy Signal via YouTube, you know that the artist just released a certified HOTTT music video called “What If,” and this sneak release has fans in a frenzy!

Though the MP3 for the chune has not been released to DJs or made available on iTunes (the release is coming in the next few weeks), the artist builds anticipation for radio play by asking some key questions that industry insiders know to be though provoking.  Questions such as “what if when me say ‘step out’ mih did ah step back” and “what if I never mastered my craft … business lock.”  Discussion is even raised about the time Busy was behind bars in the US.  Though you cannot talk to Busy directly about the questions asked, he knows you will talk amongst yourselves.  This is what we call cause and effect!  Can you imagine the Dancehall and Reggae landscape without Busy?  I can't and I don't want to.
