L3 Magazine Features Italy’s Mellow Mood for its’ April 2020 Issue!

L3 Magazine features Italy’s premiere Reggae group, Mellow Mood on the front cover of their April 2020 issue.  The feature includes an in-depth interview with Jacopo who explains how the group was introduced to Reggae, and some of the Jamaican based artists they’ve collaborated with.  When asked to choose a song for world leaders, his answer was surprising.  This interview was recorded in January making the response all the timelier.  You can read it HERE

Lia Givenchy can be described in three words: Rap, Business, Music.  The fierce rising star was introduced to Rap through her Uncle who owned a sound system in Brooklyn, New York.  Originally from Guyana, Lia knew the lane she wanted to travel.  She’s ghostwritten for significant Rap stars.  Some people are fooled by her stunningly good looks, but Lia is all about her business.

The publications 62^nd edition was released on Friday July 5^th and features Platinum and 2x Platinum producer Jon Fx on the cover.  Interviewed by Rohan Beckford, Fx engaged readers by explaining the process he uses to make music, and to touch on what it was like to work with the late XXXTentation.  Some called the rapper difficult, but Fx understood him – and brought out his best.

Writer Nova Cashh speaks to Billboard recording artist Xyclone, who explains why he is self-managed and the role Spragga Benz and Bobby Konders plays when decisions need to be made about his career.  Xyclone also responds to the challenges of being an artist who releases Dancehall in the U.S.  The maturity of his answer might impress you.

Christopher Martin's New Single and Video - LIFE

Christopher Martin’s video for “Life” premiered today on Billboard!  The focus single from his
upcoming album Then and Now, out May 3^rd, is an up-tempo, feel good song about not taking life for granted. The single was released on Friday, March 15^th and is available on all streaming platforms.

Directed by Dameon Gayle, the video starts with flashbacks to Chris’s childhood and playing soccer, then fast-forwards to now, of him at a pool hall with friends, enjoying and cherishing the moment.  The video also has a cameo appearance of Reggae super star Busy Signal.

Produced by Omar Anthoneil Samuels and Cory William Stoneman, and written by Christopher Martin, Omar Samuels and Cory Stoneham, the song follows other album singles “Bun Fi Bun,” “Can’t Dweet Again” and “Come Back” which has over 1 million views on YouTube.  

“The video has good vibes, it was good to have my brother Busy Signal” said Christopher.  “We just wanted a simple video that captured the message, showing the simplicity of life
and just hanging out.”

And Then is the follow-up to Martin’s debut full length album “Big Deal” which reached top 5 on the Reggae Billboard Charts in 2017.

Many of you are musicians, songwriters, bands, lead singers etc, and being in the business, you work with a lot of people.  The more projects you work on, the more you have to protect your interests as it’s only a matter of time before that HIT record comes along!

With that said, when you complete a project in the foreground, the background aka the BUSINESS side of the song should look like this:

Each person who composed music that resulted in the finished piece gets a percentage ie:  Composer 1 ‘X’ % | Composer 2 ‘X’ % | Composer 3 ‘X’ % | Composer 4 ‘X’ %

Each person who wrote the lyrics that make up the song gets a percentage ie:  Writer 1 ‘X’ % | Writer 2 ‘X’ % | Writer 3 ‘X’ % | Writer 4 ‘X’ %

Each person who contributed to the overall production of the track ie:  Producer | Engineer | Engineer Assistant | Recording Location | Arranger | Background Vocals | Mixer | Drums | Lead Guitar | Keyboards | Bass | Publishing (the name of the publishing company each contributor is signed with).

If your music business behind the scenes does not look like this, I suggest you tweak the areas that are missing.  Several of you want to be in GRAMMY / American Music Awards contention, and the above is an example of what these organizations look at when artists / bands submit.

Randy Valentine arose to international attention with the release of his Mixtape Bring Back the Love, and has held the worlds’ attention through subsequent releases “Wake the Town” and “Carry On.”  He’s one of the most traveled performing artists from the UK, and has an interesting take on why his new voice is so well balanced with ‘old’ music.  When asked about the Rasta faith, Randy gives an interesting answer as to why that is none of his business except his own.

The Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra(PAO)  is an incredible union of musicians and lovers of Afrobeat.  Their ability to transcend barriers and unite people through music is something everyone has to experience.  Senior Writer Song River takes us in to the PAO world, and boy to we love what we see and hear.  After reading this interview, you will want to travel to Phoenix just to hear this orchestra!

Joah Baston got a hold of Cocoa Tea after an electrifying performance in Montreal, and got first hand proof that this Lion still roars!  Cocoa Tea’s energy is that of a younger person which is why he is one of the most appreciated elders in Reggae.

The Love Situation with Tarrus Riley

When it comes to the artistry of Tarrus Riley, the proof as they say, is in the pudding!  His new album, Love Situation, debuted in the #1 position on the iTunes charts, is Billboard certified, and has been purchased by fans in every country around the world.  Tarrus Riley and his team (Dean Fraser and Shane Brown) are amazing at what they do!

Listening to the album, there is one thing that is consistent, and that is Tarrus performs every song.  He doesn’t go into the recording booth and sing, he performs, and one of my favorite performances is the chune “One Drop” remix!  The team has taken an already great song, and made it greater which is very hard to do.

The new arrangement; strong horns and funky Reggae bass line as well as percussions that add sweet accents make this one of my favorite songs from the album, not to mention the Dubwise at the end of the song.  I’m highlighting one song, but believe me, every chune on the album is a #BoomShell performance!
