Greetings!
We watched the BET Music Awards 2013 with pride as Jabba, Bobby Konders, Dawn Penn and Chaka Demus & Pliers, King Beenie Man and Elephant
Man represented our country and genres by rocking the audience and
infecting them with the best of our culture.
They didn’t disappoint.
What the world saw was and is another reason for all award
ceremonies to include Reggae (and by extension Dancehall) as a category to
their presentation. Not as a token, but because
the people want it and we’ve earned it.
I don’t know the politics as to why Jabba and Bobby were
chosen to represent us (and it doesn’t matter), but I assure you, BET got it
100% correct. What the network did was
spotlight 30 plus years of teamwork, music production and event planning
Massive B has contributed to our industry.
That contribution deserved to be centre stage. Their years at HOT 97 FM in New York, the
annual, semi-annual and weekly parties they promote; the money they generate
for promoters and venues in New York; the opportunities they’ve given and been
a part of, from Irie Jam to Platinum Kidz to Steelie Bashment and the list goes
on. For all the artists Massive B has
worked with over the years, for all the upcoming DJ’s and sound systems, this
duo deserved every minute of spotlight, and let me just say, they should get a
little more!
Today, I ask you to reach out to them on Facebook,
Twitter or Instagram
and give them a genuine salute. Not
because of the hype of the moment, but because of the years of commitment they
have given us, unwavering. Salute them
because they were ready when called to camera, lights, action!
Salute Jabba and Bobby and thank you for a job well done.
