Shane O - Lean On Me (January 2018)

Ireland Records is quickly becoming one of my favourite ‘new’
record labels, and the song “Lean On Me” by Shane O is another musical reason
why!

Both artist and producer take to the studio to record this
song that shifts focus away from the hype (parties – girls – liquor) to life
through the eyes of people who are really experiencing hardship … the ones who
just need to hear an encouraging word from someone real.

With an acoustic intro, Shane sings “don’t worry about the
struggle or fight / fight with all of your might / you see when you’re not
string / lean on me / and when the journey seems long / lean on me / nah turn
me back or forsake you ….”

The truth of the matter is everyone you meet is going
through an issue / problem / struggle that they don’t want to tell you
about.  Songs like “Lean On Me” give them
the encouragement to know that they are not the only ones struggling, and there
is light at the end of the tunnel.

Reggae Star Gyptian at Grammy Week In New York via BB Kings!

Reggae super star Gyptian will perform at legendary music venue BB Kings in New York on January 24^th, 2018 as a part of Grammy Week.  He will be joined by rising sensation Arita for an exclusive engagement in the heart of the City that doesn’t sleep!

Produced by Tempo Television Networks, the one night engagement will feature performances of Gyptian’s newest singles “Closer” and “Leave You Alone” which come from his EP due to be released later this month, and introduces audiences to Arita’s voice who may not already be familiar with her.

Gyptian, whose catalog includes cross over hit singles “Hold Yuh,” Nah Let Go” and “Beautiful Lady” is an attraction for industry executives who will be in New York for the Grammy festivities, namely, the marking of the award shows 60^th anniversary.  When contacted about the show Gyptian said “I’m looking forward to this show because a lot of people will be there, and I’m there to entertain!”

The Significance of Fayann Lyons ‘Break the World.’

In a world where mixtapes are composed of a DJs interpretation of the hottest released music, and playlists are compiled based on a music fans favorite songs, some might be tempted to think that an album is no longer necessary, until you understand the significance of Fayann Lyons album entitled ‘Break The World.’

Moving away from the standard practice of releasing singles which a fan would have to manually assemble in one place, Fayann’s body of work houses some of the hottest Soca chunes that require nothing else than to press ‘play’ on your audio device.  A Soca album is as rare today as getting doubles, roti and alopie from a food truck on the streets of Toronto, which is why Break the World is significant.

16 tracks with catchy lyrics and up tempo music greet Fayann’s fans.  Songs like “Buff” featuring Buffy, “Break the World” and “Drift” standout.  On the latter, Fayann gives advice of what to do when people get in your way and are trying to block your progress; just drift.  Securing her point, she sings “don’t make me send fih dih jab” which is doubled in meaning: a jab referring to boxing, and a jab referring to ‘jab-jab’ as in the sub-genre of Soca.  The track “Everybody Joli” is especially infectious featuring Bunji Garlin, and has a wicked horn section.  If you’re immersed in Trini culture, you know how important horns are to Calypso, so keeping this tradition in Soca is refreshing.  Trini culture has touches of French influence
hence the title and French word play within the song.  

A favorite track by far is “Girls.”  This infectious track is classified as groovy Soca and celebrates all the things that are attractive about women!  “When the girls look good yes the boys they come around….”  In an unofficial sense the track speaks to the unity amongst women and our strength and magnetism.  We are the glue that brings and holds everything together!

Soca Season is Now So Run the “Girls” with Fayann Lyons!

Soca Season is officially upon us, and the anthem for this season is “Girls” by Fayann Lyons!  Consistently requested by fans and played by every Soca DJ / Selector at parties, Boat Cruises and Carnivals, the sweetness of the ‘Girls’ riddim is ruled by the Queen Fayann!

There is nothing men like to see more than the sweetest women having the sweetest time, whining to a sweet chune, and “Girls” is it.  Where the hot girls are, there the hot boys
will be too!

Produced by Jus Now and co-produced by DJ Fresh from the UK, “Girls” went worldwide so fast that Fayann had to bring visual to audio by releasing the music video which is racking up views like #The6ix (I hope you caught that inside joke)!

A Return to 2005 with Sizzla Kalonji

As today is Friday, I’m going to Flashback  to July 16^th, 2005 when Sizzla Kalonji released his album ‘They Ain’t Gonna See Us Fall.’  

The significance of this album lies in the title track which became an anthem for every suffering and struggling person faced with hardship.  From Jamaica Avenue in Queens, New York, to Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto, Canada, to every dance hall across Europe, and every lawn in the Caribbean, this song was #1.

Sizzla articulated the inner cry of people worldwide who refused to quit when adversaries wanted to see them fall.  The chorus is simplistic but powerful (“they ain’t gonna see us fall”), as is the 2^nd verse which says in part “pray unto the most high he help me / I want to see all my people living wealthy / take care of yourself and be healthy / go to Mount Zion that’s where your blessings be….”  The operative word is ‘pray.’

Additional classic cuts on the album include “People Need Love,” “Knowing Each Other” and “Stop Fighting.”

‘Ain’t Gonna See Us Fall’ is a raw testimony from one of Regga’e most influential artists on the issues and controversies he’s personally faced.  The statement is pieced together through various Jamaican singles (some lesser known outside of Jamaica) that served as a schannel for the artist to vent.  The album showcases the prolific, biting verses of Sizzla Kalonji as he speaks to local criticism, his adoration of females and his fiercely independent sometimes eccentric philosophies on life.  Sizzla blends truth and Rasta wisdom with hardcore lyrics over a variety of riddims.  The album makes good examples of why Sizzla’s influence looms large in Reggae and expanding among the Hip Hop nation.

Primary producer on the album is Free Willy.
