HOTTT New Dancehall-Soca ►►► Tifa – Nah Play Wid It!

Greetings! 

One of the best female artists on the Dancehall circuit is Dancehall Diva Tifa!  Not only does Tifa have a slew of releases designed to keep her fans moving, she also has a catalog that keeps her on the stage for more than an hour, and her show is well rounded which includes Dancehall, Reggae and Soul performances! 

Tifa’s latest release, “Nah Play Wid It” comes from the Girl Segment Riddim produced by ZJ Ice for Thirty Six Degrees Productions, and we hear our Diva ride this riddim, which is Dancehall fused with Soca, so neatly, nothing is left out of place.  Tifa Sing-jay’s “yes waist line full ah wire me ah bend it up so / back it up – back it up down pon dih floor / den me bubble two time den me bring it up slow / woi / go deh mih gyal / go dih go-go / tek dih floor / me ah put on a show / dis yah gyal nah deady-deady / me nah see no john crow / twist up mih body like me ah Tybo / den mih ben down stucky and fling it dung low….”  Madd! 

Musically, if you’re looking for an updated riddim to take you to a Soca segment, or bring you out of a Soca segment, this chune and this riddim is for you!  Tifa doesn’t disappoint and through this song, opens the gateway for more Soca releases and or Soca collaborations … versatility is her middle name!

HOTTT New Reggae ►►► CBlock – Killing Me Inside {Tropical Escapes Riddim}!

It’s no secret that one of my favorite artists is CBlock and it’s also no secret that CBlock is on the rise in terms of the amount of fans being drawn to his voice and by extension to his music.  With all of that said, I know you're going to LOVE this white label release called “Killing Me Inside.” 

Singing from the position of a man who has been turned down by the woman he has great affection for, C pours out his heart when he sings “I can’t stop the rain / I can’t stop the pain / no / since you’ve been gone / nothing is the same / your memories remain / I think of how it used to be / and it’s killing me inside / baby / though I try to be strong I can’t hide ….”

Produced by Chimney Records, and acknowledging this release is a white label, CBlock rides the riddim perfectly as he is totally in sync with the bass line which he uses emphasize his lyrics.  Also, the passion with which he sings, you would really believe he is a man who is hurting over not being with the one he loves.  Mercy!

Irie Jamboree to Make History at Barclays Center!

 

 

Not since the days of Buju Banton selling out Madison Square Gardens (2007), or Shabba (now Emperor Shabba) winning back to back Grammy's (1992 – As Raw as Ever and 1993 – X-tra Naked) has the Caribbean community seen history unfold before their eyes as what we are about to see August 30th to September 1st!

Irie Jamboree is set to make history at the Barclays centre for the first ever all Caribbean music festival starring Wyclef Jean (Friday), Bunji Garlin (Saturday), Emperor Shabba and Damian Jr. Gong (Sunday). The center literally comes alive with the best talent representing the Caribbean.

Produced by Caribbean Fever and Irie Jam Radio Group, the two organizations demonstrate unity by co-producing this landmark event. At their press conference in Brooklyn, and blocks away from the Barclays Center, Dahved Levy says producers want to make and have "an impressive Caribbean presence" while Bobby Clarke adds that this is "a good look for the community." 

Promoting the event from Florida to Canada and Haiti, patrons will receive 3 days of the best. Blondine Reid organized the Haitian night aka International Night, and selected legendary Zouk band Kassav, one of the top Zouk bands from Martinique as one of the headlining acts to join Wyclef for International Night. The band also did an extensive radio tour in Haiti to support their appearance. The tour was well received and connected with the Haitian community in New York who expected to attend in large numbers. 

Senator Kevin Parker, who represents the largest Caribbean constituency in New York was on hand to congratulate organizers on the upcoming show. The Senator admired ladies dressed in traditional Carnival costumes that reflect the homeland of Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons who come from Trinidad & Tobago.  Marking the second day of festivities the husband and wife duo will be joined by Alison Hinds, Iwer George, Edwin Yearwood and more for the August 31^st show. 

As well, the Emperor himself was on hand to let fans know they are in for one if the best showcases of talent. Absent from the press conference was Damian Marley, but, through the events PR rep Anthony Turner, made it clear he is performing because of Shabba, one if his artistic idols. Lady Saw has also been confirmed (last minute) and this will mark her last performance as a Dancehall artist as she transitions to a career in Gospel.

Morgan Heritage – Return of the Kings at SOB’s!

Very rarely do we have a group, a Reggae group, open themselves to a hungry audience.  The hunger (which can be described as a yearning to know everything there is to know about a group while they’re performing and beyond the stage), will be fed but the question becomes who is going to feed that hunger:  the group performing or the audience listening.

Morgan Heritage (Lukes, Una, Peetah, Gramps, Memo) took to the stage at SOB’s in Manhattan and fed their hungry audience.  Beginning with fresh greens, Jemere Morgan, son of Gramps Morgan warmed the audience with his hit singles and did so acoustically.  Having heard him on the radio, this change was a refreshing treat.  The audience was more than receptive especially when he hit his current hit song “Neighborhood Girl.”  The audience erupted and sang along with the Junior Morgan which supports the majorities’ opinion that he is the new Prince of Reggae.

Making a grand entrance, including security having to clear a path for them to get on stage (the venue was packed to capacity), Morgan Heritage fed the hungry audience a super-sized main course and dessert.  The crowd enjoyed every morsel, licked their fingers and scraped their plate.  Here’s how MH did it….

Beginning the show with track 7 from their album Here Come the Kings, “Looking For the Roots” and all its’ Roots Reggae greatness set the tone and the pace for the evening.  The group went on to perform “Here Comes the Kings” and “The Perfect Love Song.”  In addition to performing songs from their album, older classics “Don’t Haffi Dread,” “Your Friend” and “She’s Still Loving Me” hit the spot of fans who have been with the group from day one.

Never afraid to tell fans the way it is, Peetah spoke to VP Records asking them to be more supportive of Reggae artists, he spoke to all radio hosts (in particular HOT 97 FM New York), calling on them to support more independent artists as well as more support for Reggae artists and not just Dancehall artists.  Further on in the discussion, Peetah took aim at promoters who produce stage shows without including Reggae artists and only promoting Dancehall artists. 

As a salute to the legends who came before, Peetah explained the relationship between his Father, Denroy Morgan and Toots Hibbert who are brothers, born and raised in the same house.  From that explanation, the group performed “Bam Bam” in a Mento style and also explained that Toots and the Maytals are the ones who began what we know as Reggae.  Nice.

Continuing with a salute to their forefathers, Gramps explained the reason why he loves Shabba as much as he does an gave the audience a DJ freestyle that the audience loved.  You need to hear the icon say “ah meeeeeeeeeeeee man!”  Classic.

Behind the scenes, Shane Brown did a flawless job with the engineering, Destine Xposure did an excellent job with organization, and Irish and Chin did, as they always do, a great job with marketing; perfect team work and an example of the reasons why all are considered to be the best in their field.

The HOTTEST hott-ed one Mr. Busy Signal has a new chune on the road that I can officially confirm is off the thermometer because of its heat!

Busy’s newest chune “Set It Good” has the ladies rushing the dance floor as I recently witnessed on the All White and Anything Boat Ride (hosted by Mont Bangers and Dilinga Movements) this past weekend.  As soon as the chune was dropped by Mr. Crump the Nerd, DJ Bully, RJ (of Road International), Prezzi Bashment and Nemo DMV, every single female on the boat rushed the middle of the boat demonstrating how they ‘set it good.’  Talk about ‘rock the boat!’  If you don’t believe how the over capacity boat got rocked, visit www.skipdaline.com to see the evidence!  Ka-Boom!

It’s HOTTT, it’s summertime and the ladies are doing what the ladies do … they’re looking cute!  Gentlemen are doing what gentlemen around the town do … they’re admiring the sights of the cute ladies and Dancehall artist QQ is one of them.  Putting voice to microphone, this young artist tells a story about a chica he met you is “Pretty and Cute!”

Luciano “The Messenger” Closes MIRF’s Milestone Celebration

In preparing for its 10^th anniversary celebration the Montreal International Reggae Festival (MIRF) is making huge efforts to appease loyal patrons. In so doing MIRF added Luciano to the Sunday night roster at the Old Port of Montreal, where the festivities roll out on August 16, 17 and 18. 

Regrettably, in a surprising message, Takana Zion announced his inability to tour this summer and will not be appearing at MIRF 2013. Previously slated to perform on MIRF’s opening night, Takana Zion will leave no void, as Morgan Heritage, Chris Combette, Inword, Downtown Crew, Brian Art and Hawkeye are scheduled to kick off this significant MIRF staging on Friday August 16.  

The previously announced workshop series will take place on August 14, 15 and 16 at O Patro VYS, 356 Mount Royal E; and admission is free. Workshops will commence on Wednesday, August 14 from 6:00 to 9:00pm with Hélène Lee presenting her film Le Premiere Rasta; discussing ‘The Origins of the Movement”. On August 15 from 6:00 to 9:00pm a second workshop will be led by Roger Steffens with a focus on “The Reggae World - Spreading Out” and on August 16 from 4:00 to 6:00pm Pharaoh Freeman and Hidden Colors will present “Empowering Our People" The value of a powerful self-image. 

Saturday’s formerly released featured artists remain as: Ras Out, Dahlia, Tifa, Mr. Vegas, Kes The Band, Beenie Man and Shaggy; and on Sunday Luciano is back by popular demand. Known also as ‘The Messenger’ Luciano will join the headlining: Jah Cutta, Yellowman, Serani, Alaine, Coco Tea and Freddie McGregor to cap the three days of Reggae revelry.
