Congratulations Exco Levi ►►► Winner of the 2013 Juno for Best Reggae Recording!

Greetings!

Just as the headline says, Exco Levi is the winner of the 2013 Juno for Best Reggae Recording!  His song “Storms of Life” earned him the votes, and is one of the most uplifting songs encouraging us to not give up though sometimes the storms of life blow.  His lyrics, “Jah is my shield and guide / he’s always by my side / yea” helped to seal the deal!

Produced by Silly Walks Discotheque from Germany, who also produced the music video, the chune is one of the best and caused a radio personality from the United States to say “Exco is one his way to being the next Sizzla Kolanji.”  Ka-Boom!

Nice-ing up your blessed Sunday afternoon is the video link for Exco Levi’s chune “Storms of Life.”  Click here or on the image!

P.S.  If you’re in Germany this summer, make sure you catch the star performing at ReggaeJam Summer Festival August 2nd to 4th!

HOTTT New Tour Announcement ►►► Richie Spice – Grooving My Girl!

HOTTT New Lover’s Rock Cover ►►► Nickeishia Barnes – Give Me You!

The name Nickeishia Barnes may sound familiar to you because of her success with Digicel Rising Stars, and her name may sound familiar because of the fantastic EP she released in January called ‘Wounded in Love’ on the J’Island Records label.  Today, Nickieshia Barnes is going to sound familiar because of the cover she’s recorded of Tamia’s song “Give Me U.”

Produced by Sheldon ‘Calibud’ Stewart (son of the legend Bobby Digital), the song hears Nickeishia in a style that is Lover’s Rock and at the same time allows her R&B voice to shine bright.  The part of the song where she sings “sexy words / don’t mean a lot to me / cause I’ve heard / just about everything / that a man could ever say / to me to make me stay / before / now I need more / so don’t bring me roses / bring me the truth...” will impress even the toughest critics!  Ka-Boom!

The preview link is available on SoundCloud.  Big up DJ Steve from the Karma Reggae Show for breaking this chune to his radio audience in the UK!

Best of the Best Concert 2013 ft. Chronixx - Judgement!

Greetings!

As it is with the Father, so shall it be with the son.  The message began with the artist Chronicle (the Father) and now Chronixx (the son) continues, arming himself with “Judgment!”

Produced by Liv Up Records, the Asphalt Riddim hears Chronixx’s lyrics hit hard as he sings “Papa him ah ball / say no money inna wallet / Mama she ah ball / say no money print pon her forehead / cousin him ah cry / say him and poverty ah married / him nah eat nuh food from last week….”  All of this from the voice of a young man just reaching 20 – odd.

So why the excitement?!  Well, when was the last time a young artist took the bulls by the horns so seriously to sing about the reality of the youth today?

Performing this year at Best of the Best Concert in Miami is Chronixx, backed by the Zinc Fence Band!  To understand why so many people are excited about the artist and his music, and make sure you reach from early.  Check the flyers below for details!

Strictly For the Lover's ►►► Stephen Souza – Missing You!

Greetings!

Stephen Souza has a brand new song on the road, and true to Stephen’s style, it’s designed for the Lover’s!

His new song “Missing You” is about a man who got into an argument with his miss, she left and now he’s missing her … bad!  Familiar theme brought to reality thanks to the literal cry in Stephen’s voice when he sings (not to worry, he and his miss are ‘A’ ok)!

Musically, the song (can’t call this one a chune) is a synthesizer based melody with a bass line you will respect as it’s familiar, and allows the artist a good canvass to paint these lyrics:  “now yesterday we had a quarrel / I said some things I shouldn’t have said / now I lay across the bed where we once laid / now the only thing that greets me / is this cold and empty pillow / and I’m going girl out of my head ….”  Mercy!

Combining elements of R&B and Reggae with a dash of Lover’s Rock, Stephen Souza had a brand new chune on his hands waiting for you to hear!

Catch Stephen Souza and the song “Missing You” at the video link below, and make sure you hail him on Twitter >>> @stephensouzanyc  you can also 'Like' him on Facebook and become a fan >>> Facebook/StephenSouzaMusic

P.S.  Stephen will be entertaining Mothers on Mothers Day with this and his other chunes.  See flyer below for details!

HOTTT New Roots Reggae ►►► Khalilah Rose – Your Eyes!

Greetings!

Although this is a Roots Reggae, riddim, the message is one of love, and it’s delivered by Lioness Khalilah Rose.  The chune is called “Your Eyes” and it must be requested from your favorite radio, mixtape and early warm Dancehall selectors!

Produced by her home label Ackee & Dumplin Music, and armed with an easy bounce bass line and familiar Roots Reggae drum pattern (the kind where the drum stick hits the rim of the snare) played off the keyboard skank, Khalilah Rose sings “windows to your soul has revealed to me / that you / want me to be yours / but it frightens me / I know you conspire / to set me on fire / with desire / no I’m not taking a next glance ….”  Pow!

Khlailah goes on to explain that when she looks in the young man’s eyes, his soul speaks to her and that is too much to handle.  Mercy!  Talk about great lyrics joined with great musical composition!

Barrier Free Takes Young Hawk Down While Innocent Loses Their Innocence…

Greetings!

They came from Japan, assessed their competition, and had ‘No Mercy’ as they went to town on Young Hawk from the Bronx and Innocent Sound from Florida.  If King Klepto was in the Clash (they elected not to perform as Polly Famous is now with LP International), this Sound Clash would have come down to Barrier Free and King Klepto.

Drawing 1st, Innocent had a good opening round.  Their first chune from Cocoa Tea “Kill Ah Sound” was a good intro because of the chune being cut on the Hypocrite riddim, but the strength of the dub would have been better served in a later round.  Dapalee, stuck to the Kutchie riddim like glue and made a mis-step selecting Sizzla’s “Thank You Mama.”  At that point in the Clash, the chune didn’t fit.

Exposing their youth, and ineffective ability to Clash at the 2nd tier level, Young Hawk, representing the Bronx, played their first round with HEAVY dubplates.  Critical error.  They played round 1 as if it were round end.  Drawing for murderous arsenal such as Buju Banton’s “Come Tess Mih Nah” and Bounty Killers “Ask Fih War” in round 1 was not a good look.  By the time they got to round 2, they were not able to hold the crowds’ attention nor maintain the level of showmanship from round 1.  Foolish.

Barrier Free from Japan saw the set up, and decided they weren’t going to be drawn out by Young Hawk by playing heavy dubs in round 1.  Instead they drew for dubs from Beres Hammond on the Heavenless riddim and Luciano’s “The Lord is My Light.”  Moving like slow creeping Vodka, they finished with Cocoa Tea’s “Dem Ah Call Us Pirate” and had the crowd in the palm of their hands.  The audience even worked around the fact that these sound System Assassins were limited when speaking English.  The music did the talking.

By the time round 2 came along, the titles became ‘Young Hawk Down,’ and ‘Innocent Sound is Fighting for Life.’  Notable points include Dapalee (Innocent Sound) playing quality Lindo P dubplates and his verbal aim at Barrier Free saying “Barrier Free yuh ah talk too much.  Ping pong and ying yong nuh make one!”  The crowd roared.  Dapalee then selected Beenie Man’s “War” and the crowd was silent....

Barrier Free turned on the jets.  Drawing for Protoje’s “Kingston Be Wise,” Mr. Vegas’s “Do You Know” and IOctane’s “L.O.V.E. Y.O.U.” translated to “D.O.N.E. Y.O.U” impressed the crowd to the point that by the time they dropped not 1, not 2, but 3 Jr. Gong dubs, they flattened Hickory House.  From that moment on, Barrier Free was in cruise control.

Barrier Free easily won this Clash.  They didn’t get drawn out by Young Hawks foolery, and they weren’t entertaining Innocent’s innocence.

Congratulations to Michael Moore Entertainment, Andrew Digital and 2-Lined Music Hut for staging a good Clash.  Honorebel mention goes to Radication Sound whose early warm was impressive as they drew for dubs from Gregory Isaacs, Lindo P and Blessed, and leveled fans with the “My Conversation” Dubplate.  Ka-Boom!

As the only female on the bill, Angelina Montana demonstrated her fearlessness which I appreciate, however, it is clear she’s too war hungry, losing the respect she could have earned if she had selected according to her role and not selecting as if she’s in a Clash.  Not yet Angelina, but you will get there!

You Might Need The Hypocrite ►►► Sound Clash Fundamentals!

This is Sound Clash!

This blog is intended for the younger sound men / women who have aspirations to be in a Sound Clash.  Despite how it looks, Sound Clash is a sport that is played amongst friends / colleagues in an elite industry.  It is elite because the Sound Clash fraternity is made up of skilled teams who have mastered the art of oration, chune selection and the right riddim.  This is not easy, not to mention, you must Clash with respect for your opponent, respect for the music and respect for Sound Clash fans who have come to see you perform.

Your first round should always be singers.  Always.  Don’t let people who don’t know what they’re doing draw you out and put you on the wrong path.  Consider the singing round to be soup or salad before your main meal.  Older heads will draw for Luciano, Sanchez and Freddie McGregor.  Newer sounds may choose Gappy Ranks, Chronixx, Etana; the point is the singers are showcased.

Your next rounds will depend on the strength of your dub-box.  If you are a sound who has a few well cut dubs, enter a clash that features 6 sounds or more.  Your chances of survival are greater as the time you have to play is shorter i.e. each round will be about 15 minutes or 10 dubs.  Your focus should be survival as in getting to round 3.

If you’re in a Sound Clash with few sounds (as a new sound you don’t want to be in this scenario), your dub-box needs to be stronger as chances are you’re up against more elite sounds.  In this case, your second round will be approximately 30 minutes or 20 dubs and you’re dealing with the heart of the matter … killing a sound.  This is the round where you can go one of two ways.  If you have a good arsenal of combination dubs, this is a good time to use it.  If you have a strong box of DJ’s, then you’re unleashing Bounty Killer’s, Mavado’s, Vybz Kartels, Busy Signals etc.

Round 3 places emphasis on selecting your target, aiming with a steady dub and speech, and going in for the kill.  At this point in time, speech on the mic is heavy as the mics-man / mics-woman and the selector are moving in unison and have coordinated their timing perfectly and like the movements of a Cartier timepiece.  For this, you have the crowd on your side.

Dub for Dub!  This topic is controversial in the heat of the moment, but, after reasoning, it’s not controversial at all.  If you’re a sound who has won all of your rounds, there is no need for dub for dub.  You’ve won the Clash.  If each sound competing has won the same number of rounds, then a clear winner needs to be determined which is when dub for dub / chune fih chune comes in to play.  Don’t let people who don’t know what they’re doing draw you out and steal your win by inducing you into chune fih chune.  I’ve seen several people lose a Sound Clash they clearly won because of getting drawn out.  Don’t let this happen to you!

Tonight (April 5th, 2013) in Toronto, King Klepto, Innocent Sound, Barrier Free and Young Hawk will be implementing all and more of what I just talked about above.  All sounds are in what I call the second tier.  They’re not on the Mighty Crown, David Rodigan, King Addies, Saxon Sound first tier level yet, but they’re getting there.  If you’re in Toronto, make sure you reach.

*Note:  This is intended to be a very basic guide for entry level sounds wishing to compete effectively in a Sound Clash.  More depth on Sound Clash will be shared leading up to World Clash hosted by Irish and Chin in Jamaica in October, 2013.

For your listening pleasure, a classic dubplate from Frankie Paul on the Hypocrite Riddim.  Run chune >>>

Super HOTTT New Reggae ►►► Miriam Simone – Dem Ah Chat!

Greetings!

Reggae music has one more reason to be excited, and that one more reason is a singer by the name of Miriam Simone!

Performing with passion, Miriam has caught the attention of a number of people, including the legendary ear of the Digital B recording studio on Ron’s Road in Kingston, Jamaica.  There, where history has been recorded by legends such as Buju Banton, Morgan Heritage and Shabba Ranks, Miriam Simone laid the vocals for the chune “Dem Ah Chat” which is one of many that will catch your attention!

Adapting the familiar lyrics from Bob Marley and The Wailers chune “Hypocrites,” Miriam brings the message to 2013 by singing: “Dem ah chat, chat, chat, chat, chat, chat, chat pon mih business / mih business, mih business / ah / nobody haffi know / dangerous people / I know them all / they smile in my face / but don’t like me at all / but I don’t mind them / I just stay far / they are hypocrites but they can’t faze me / I still show them my Love….”  Ka-Boom!

Musically, you will be excited by the richness of the bass line which is the ultimate back up to Miriam and supports her every word.  The greatness of the music comes courtesy of Giark, Son of the legend, Bobby Digital!  If you are a player of Reggae music, this is a chune you must add to your selection.
