HOTTT New Soca! Patrice Roberts – Ah Little Wine!

Trinidad & Tobago Carnival season is here and Soca enthusiasts around the world are excited!  This is the season that determines which chunes beat on the road for Carnival festivals around the world.  One young lady will be busy worldwide for the entire year and it’s all because she gave you “Ah Little Wine!”
Patrice Roberts teams with Fryktion on the Spanish Fly Riddim for this HOTTT Soca chune which is as heated as her Supermodel looks!  Patrice sings:  “everybody / wine on somebody now / take a wine / everybody / wine on somebody now / a little wine never hurt nobody …  / inside dih fete / having a time / drinks in your head / it’s time to unwind / time to free up and time to let go ….”  Kaboom!

Just picture Patrice performing this chune on stage and 10’s of thousands of people moving with her in unison!  Madd!  You’ll have the chance to see it when you tune in to hear her compete as a finalist in the Groovy Soca Monarch competition to be held on February 8th, 2013 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium!  Go Patrice!

HOTTT New Reggae! Lutan Fyah – Gospel Winer!

So the drama in the church continues this week with Sister Dina’s daughter who took off with the Deacon and is dating the Pastor!  Ha!  Don’t take me too seriously, but take Lutan Fyah’s “Gospel Winer” seriously as that’s where I’m getting all the details!

Teaming with Kirk ‘Kirkledove’ Bennett, Lutan Fyah gives us a sonic version of a Jerry Springer show  as he leaks all the details about Sister Dina’s daughter who does everything including peep to see how much people are putting in the offering pan.  Lord!

Musically, Kirkledove’s brilliance shines as the chune is percussion heavy with the drums, and high hat which mimicks a tambourine on the offbeat.  Melodically, the banjo provokes the bass into mellow action making room for Lutan’s vocals to deliver the juicy and gossip-y details!  Woi!

Pree the lyrics:  “she dress up and gone ah bible class / she leff out wid ar skirt too short / she siddung careless then focus pon har / she get inna spirit when the Deacon ah talk / all dih church bredda love how she gwaan….”

◄◄◄ Throwback Thursday! He’s Broader Than Broadway and We’ve Caught Him!

The year was 1979, and the album Broader than Broadway was just released.  Barrington Levy, aka the singer with the canary voice had the world locked and listening to his every note.

It’s hard to believe, but Barrington began his recording career at the age of 14 when he teamed with his cousin in 1976 to form the band the Mighty Multitude.  That experience yielded the song “My Black Girl” and armed the singer with enough confidence to know, music is where he is destined to be.

Fast forward to 1979, and we have the album Broader than Broadway.  Track 12 is one of the many chunes that holds our attention.  “You Have Caught Me” is simplistic in riddim delivery, making it the perfect canvass for Barrington to paint the most beautiful portrait … a song of love!

The canary voice sings “you have caught me baby / you have caught me / and I’m falling in Love with You / so there ain’t nothing else / for you to do / but to love me like I love you…”  Kaboom!

This classic chune still gets fans of all age groups even to this day.  Hard to believe it’s 32 years old and gets a huge forward every time it’s played.

Some of the people who helped bring Levy’s voice to prominence include Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes, and his work with Roots Radics band.  Add to that the fans whom he was performing for in the Dancehalls from such a young age.  Early hits, that bring back special memories for fans are “Murderer,” “Broader Than Broadway” and “Collie Weed.”

HOTTT New Reggae! MasSicker aka King Mas – Fade Away

Riddim – check.  Lyrics – check.  Artist – check.  We begin 2013 with the music and message of MasSicker aka King Mas who doesn’t disappoint with his chune “Fade Away!”  Performed on an updated version of the 1976 Studio One classic, Unchained Riddim, MasSicker lays the foundation for what 2013 holds for all of us:  #1 and we don’t play #2!

Using his microphone responsibly, King Mas singjays:  “number one we don’t play number two / all dem ah try dem can stop dih Warriors from go through / dis dih natty rebel and yuh ah go get slew / many are called but the chosen are few (repeat) / because jah know we keep stepping up higher / blazin up dih fyah / fih dih yute ah revolute ah spark it like ah live wire / Babylon time ah expire.…”

These lyrics are for the people who have been stepped on, stepped over and wronged.  These lyrics are for the people who will rise in 2013!  Kaboom!

Vocal Signature:  I Tell Yuh!  On the heels of his successful single “One Wish” released in July, 2011 King MAS recently completed his first official studio album under his own Viral Sounds Entertainment music label. The album draws upon support from the legendary Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, the talents of the quickly rising Dubtonic Kru, productions from international producer “Dready,” a collaboration with the upcoming R&B/Reggae crooner Jemere Morgan and support from many others. The culmination of 6 years in the industry, this will be the first showcase of all that the king can do and will mark the beginning of what looks to be a long, prosperous, and illustrious career built from the ground up. Look for this fiery, dynamic, and yet, smooth young king to continue to “MasSicker” Babylon with words, power, and sound.
