Hotta Maestro Gets Clean Bill of Health for 2017

Jamaica’s famed international Selector and Personality Hotta Maestro (formally of Swatch International and Jamaica’s infamous Passa Passa street dance), received a clean bill of health from his medical team for 2017.

Diagnosed in 2016 with sleep apnea (a common disorder in which a person experiences a pause in their breathing while asleep) which in turn led to Pulmonary Heart Failure (which causes shortness of breath and swelling of the body), Maestro was hospitalized at University Hospital and under doctors care until the issue was healed.  “Maestro was a good patient” said the Selectors lead doctor.  “He did everything that was asked of him which led to his recovery.  He is good to go!”

The go-to Selector is regarded as one of the best in the business.  Popularizing street parties in Jamaica, as well as representing brand Jamaica while performing abroad, Maestro has made artists music popular in Dancehalls around the world.  Performing alongside Demarco on the hot single “Lazy Body” which enjoys more than 4 million views on YouTube, the Selector, MC, Artiste and Actor has made his stamp known worldwide.

The international Reggae and Dancehall fraternity expressed concern for Maestro when word circulated that he was not well.  Boston’s Junior Rodigan encouraged fans to pray for Maestro via Twitter.  “I appreciate all the prayers love and support” said Maestro from his home in Kingston.  “I have a new lease on life, and I’m ready to hit the road playing the best music for my fans!”

Maestro is available for local and international bookings as of February 3rd, 2017.

Vybz Kartel and Rolling Stone!

I remember when we relaunched L3 Magazine in July, 2011.  Zakada Milton wrote an excellent article on 'Who is the King of the Dancehall.' We got it right then, and 5 years later Rolling Stone has it right now!

"Now I'm off the streets and out of their way and no one can fill the shoes..." Quote from Vybz Kartel regarding the current state of Dancehall. This is a must read >>> http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/vybz-kartel-still-ruling-dancehall-after-years-in-prison-w448510

Get Those Splits Right!

Many of you are musicians, songwriters, bands, lead singers etc, and being in the business, you work with a lot of people.  The more projects you work on, the more you have to protect your interests as it’s only a matter of time before that HIT record comes along!

With that said, when you complete a project in the foreground, the background aka the BUSINESS side of the song should look like this:

Each person who composed music that resulted in the finished piece gets a percentage ie:  Composer 1 ‘X’ % | Composer 2 ‘X’ % | Composer 3 ‘X’ % | Composer 4 ‘X’ %
Each person who wrote the lyrics that make up the song gets a percentage ie:  Writer 1 ‘X’ % | Writer 2 ‘X’ % | Writer 3 ‘X’ % | Writer 4 ‘X’ %

Each person who contributed to the overall production of the track ie:  Producer | Engineer | Engineer Assistant | Recording Location | Arranger | Background Vocals | Mixer | Drums | Lead Guitar | Keyboards | Bass | Publishing (the name of the publishing company each contributor is signed with).

If your music business behind the scenes does not look like this, I suggest you tweak the areas that are missing.  Several of you want to be in GRAMMY / American Music Awards contention, and the above is an example of what these organizations look at when artists / bands submit.

Maroon 5 ft. Kendrick Lamar - Don't Wanna Know!

When a song is this hot, you need a red alert emoji!  Maroon 5 has released their newest song "Don't Wanna Know" which features Kendrick Lamar.  This is a first time collaboration between the two, and it's one that I like.

The song, which is about a man who doesn't want to know who the new person is in his ex's life, is simplistically written which hears Adam Levine sing "I don't wanna know / and every time I go out / I hear it from this one / I hear or from that one that you got someone new..."

There's nothing like seeing your Ex move on with someone else, so Kendrick comes in with 16 bars about screenshots and hashtags, and a reminder that "he's right now but your body's here with me!"

Stream "Don't Wanna Know" on YouTube >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxPv8mSTv9U

Jah Cure Dials In with "Telephone Love!"

Before you jump to any conclusions, let me tell you that “Telephone Love” is not a cover of the hit single by Shabba Ranks and JC Lodge, BUT, Jah Cure’s song is an original HIT single.

This soon to be certified platinum single by Caribbean standards, combined a few key ingredients to make the song as great as it is.  First, Jah Cure teamed with his own Iyah Cure Records family to get the right sound.  Second, he consulted with his bag of lyrics to create the right word sequence.  Third, he tested the song with a few key DJs, one of which being New York’s infamous Pee-Wee, and voila, we have a hit … which is the first of 3 exclusive singles coming our way!

The artist sings:  “good morning / if you’re not with me then I’m calling / I need to know where you are / I would go anywhere you are / good morning / you know I’m tired of the calling / baby I need you cause I’m morning / right now I’d travel to the stars….”

Musically, you will love the roll of the drum at the intro of the song, the announcement of the horn section, and the sweet flow of the bass.  If you’re into music on a deeper level, you will LOVE the bridge, and you will love the saxophone playing authentic RnB which transitions in to Dubwise.  This record tho … Mercy!

Family, we have a hit chune.  From Jamaica Avenue in Queens, to Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, to Eglinton Ave West in Toronto, to Askew Rd in London, to every road and avenue in Jamaica and around the world.

Buss the big chune to your friends using the YouTube link below and connect with The Cure on IG / Twitter @therealjahcure!

Reggae Star Hezron Hails a “Taxi Driver” to Take Him Home!

Imagine a great love story playing out in song.  We’re introduced to the characters, the plot and the imagery, and then gradually we’re introduced to the outcome.  Imagine all of this being performed by world class Reggae Star, Hezron!

Hezron’s new single “Taxi Driver” is a love story about a man / performing artist who has been on tour for months, and is eager to get home to his baby.  Taken from his album Life I Live (Soulful Salvation), the artist soulfully sings “taxi driver / tale me to my baby now / hey driver / take I just gotta get home / to her / so far away / but it feels so close / texting each other – who loves who the most / still I wish I was home ….”

Produced by Stone Love Productions, this Lover’s Rock track is perfect for your YouTube playlist!

Rico Vibes from Atlanta’s Da Flava Radio gives this song a thumbs all the way up as does Sunsplash Media’s Selecta Princess and Jah Prince, and Jamaica’s Irie FM.  They all say that Hezron is the Lionel Richie of Lover’s Rock and Reggae - and now we need you to agree too!  Make sure you leave your comments under the video!

Kent Jones ft. Froggy MaddSquad - I Don't Mind Remix

Yoooooooooooooooo!  Imagine a collaboration between We The Best Recording Artist Kent Jones and Real Squad Records recording artist Froggy MaddSquad.  If you can imagine that, then you can already hear the remix to “I Don’t Mind!”

Both artists are from the Sunshine State, and both artists are hot like yaaaaaz, so it’s only natural that Froggy drop these lyrics:  “so mih take her to Jamaica / and carry her on the beach and give her my jelly water / from last night in the club it’s the only thing she ask for / so me bless up ting just like a pastor.”  K-A-B-O-O-M!

Kent comes in with the catchy hook “you keep telling me this / and telling me that / you say once you take me with you I’d never go back / now I got a lesson / that I gotta teach / I’m a show you that where you from don’t matter to me…”

The way you love this remix, you are going to demand a music video – it’s that good – and a perfect balance of Yankee and Yardie vibes!

Exco Levi Mourns The Death of Delus...

Exco Levi, Canada’s most celebrated and recognized Reggae Ambassador, mourns the passing of Dancehall artist Delus who passed away on Wednesday June 22nd at his home in Jamaica.
Exco Levi

Receiving the news by telephone, Exco was shocked as he and Delus spent time together during the artists most recent trip to Jamaica.  The two worked together on Exco’s music video for “Siren” which was shot on location in Waterhouse.  Delus made a guest appearance, and his licensed firearm was used as a prop by the lead character in the video; and the two discussed recording together in the future.  “I couldn’t believe when I got the call” said Exco from his home in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.  “He was a good yute, a family man; this is hard to accept.”

Unaware of any issues with the artist at the time of shooting the music video, Exco went on to say “sometimes in life we see the top but we don’t see the bottom.  We all saw Delus.  We know he made music and was trying with his career, we saw him on the outside, but we don’t know what was happening on the inside.  We don’t know what was happening in the background, so I’m appealing to everyone, to please take time with each other.  Be supportive, lend a listening ear and do good.  We don’t know what others are going through.  I wish things turned out differently for Delus.”

Though Exco’s song “Siren” is about a mother’s son who was cornered by Police while reminiscing on the bad things he has done in life, and feeling there is no time to right the wrongs he’s done, the artist can’t help but feel for Delus’s Mother and family.  Exco hopes that this song, produced by Oneness Records, will be an alarm to get people living a negative lifestyle to stop.

The industry continues to react to Delus’s passing with shock and grief.  Exco plans to attend Delus’s funeral as soon as arrangements are shared.

“Siren” is available on YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRNFXInX7Ls

Ammoye Makes “Sorry” Video Debut At Rum Diaries!

Canada’s Reggae Songstress Ammoye debuts her music video for her #1 hit single “Sorry” at Rum Diaries (368 Bayly Street West), Ajax’s premiere location for Caribbean entertainment and cuisine which is located in the heart of the city.

On Thursday June 23rd Ammoye will be center stage for an intimate and interactive evening with fans as she shares her experiences of filming the music video at various locations in her home city of Toronto, and the reasons why the song resonates with so many people.

The video debut and launch is a part of Durham’s Caribbean Festival week which showcases the best Caribbean talent at a series of calendar events preceding the annual parade.

Speaking to colleagues in Jamaica while at Taxi Recording Studio’s in Kingston, Ammoye shared “I can’t wait for everyone to see my music video.  It was shot at landmarks such as Lula Lounge in downtown Toronto, and along our famed waterfront.  A lot of love went in to making ths video which I want the world to enjoy.”

Shot and directed by Donovan Drummond from Blakk Beat Productions, the concept of the video sees Ammoye performing the hit single on stage, then transitioning to her personal life in which she’s just had a heated argument with her partner for which she has to apologize.  The singer emphasizes the words “sorry baby … I apologize” which are difficult words for some to say.

The single was included on Ammoyes Mixtape Enter The Warrior-Ess which was hosted by Natural High Music from Jamaica.  The single will be included on Ammoye’s forthcoming album The Light which includes recordings with Taxi Studio’s Sly Dunbar, Penthouse Records’ Donovan Germain and Grafton 2 Studio with Mikey Bennett.  All three producers are award winning and have created long lasting careers for several stalwarts in Reggae and Dancehall.  Ammoye is confident she will be included in that echelon.

Ammoye, a two time JUNO Award nominee for Best Reggae Recording has previously released albums Haffi Win with Rise Ashen and Baby It’s You produced by Kemar McGregor.

About Ammoye:

Ammoye Sings of love, life and justice.  She is a Lightworker and Soul Rebel. Ammoye’s name is inspired by the Italian word for love which is what goes into her music, and is a reflection of how audiences respond to her whenever she performs.

Rooted in Reggae and an appreciator of all genres of music Ammoye effortlessly glides from Reggae to Dancehall and Dub, to Gospel and Soul.  If the track is right, you can also hear Canada’s Songstress perform to Hip Hop and R&B with breathtaking ease and presence. Her phenomenal single and video, “Radio” enjoyed extensive radio play worldwide and thousands of impressions on social media.  The song charted in the U.K. on Galaxy Gold Radio.

Sly & Robbie Presents: Anthony Red Rose – Déjà Vu!

For mature fans, the name Anthony Red Rose brings back sweet memories from years past, and for newer fans, the name will take some getting used to.  Whether you’re mature, or new, the chune, “Déjà Vu” will hit the spot if Lover’s Rock is your thing!

Performed on the refurbished Soon Forward / Mean Girl riddim, this 2016 version builds on the original produced by the riddim twins and Lowell Charles Filmore in 1979.  The star of that version was Gregory Isaacs with the hit and hot chune “Soon Forward;” the 2016 version stars Anthony Red Rose.

The singer sings:  “I’ve been down this road / before – before / I’ve seen this place / before – before / now I met this girl somewhere before / and she smiled at me / just like that  before / everything seems familiar for sure / as if I’ve seen all these faces before / sun rises in the morning / through my window / I’ve seen it before….”

Believe me when I tell you, this chune will be running your playlist and the airwaves (only if Lover’s Rock is your thing) because it is just wicked like that!  Musically, you’ll appreciate the creative way Sly & Robbie include creative references to Dancehall to the point that all you have to do is press play!

Yes massive – run this chune and watch the massive rock and come een!

The ‘dab’ is the latest dance craze that swept the web over the past year.  Originating in Atlanta, the new move has made several appearances in countless Rap videos, touchdown celebrations, most notable Cam Newton in the NFC Championship against the Arizona Cardinals, and now Mr. Vegas has turned the dab in to a Dancehall sensation!

The artist says “The dancers I worked with for Dancehall Dabb are some of the most professional and hardworking dancers.  Everyone around the world will be doing the dab for 2016 and beyond!”

In addition to the swagger filled dance move, the latest video features an appearance by Toronto rapper Kardinal Offishall.

Dancehall Dabb premiered on World Star Hip Hop earlier this month and has the world ‘dabbing!’  Check the video on Mr. Vegas’s VEVO Channel here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZuFoeHRTfo

UNITY Charity Hits Toronto and the GTA

UNITY Charity is proud to host eight weekly community programs across the GTA with free drop-ins teaching hip-hop art forms to youth, in partnership with Tangerine. UNITYoffers drop-in programs in Toronto, Scarborough and Mississauga with all elements of hip-hop that focus on building skills through peer-to-peer mentorship and artistic performance.

When we first heard UNITY was expanding its community programs, we wanted to get behind them and lend our support,” said Peter Aceto, President and CEO of Tangerine. “Over the years we’ve seen first-hand the positive impact their programs have on local youth, so we’re thrilled to expand our partnership to help them grow these efforts.

UNITY Charity empowers Canadian youth 10-18 years of age to be role models and leaders in their communities through after school and community programs in break dancing, graffiti art, spoken word poetry and beat boxing. The community drop-in programs for the 2016 season will include topics such as MC and Turntable foundations, the basics of break dancing and beat boxing battles, musicality, physical wellness, and cultural context.

"We are so excited to be expanding UNITY's community programs to create more accessible arts programming across our city and safe spaces for youth in the critical hours after school," said Michael Prosserman, Founder and Executive Director of UNITY Charity. "These programs meet youth where they are at, while providing opportunities for youth to express their stress in a safe, positive and encouraging space almost every day of the week."

UNITY Charity engages and empowers youth to make better choices as leaders, mentors and positive community role models leading to more productive citizens, safer schools, and healthier communities.

Founded in 2007 by Michael Prosserman aka “Bboy Piecez”, one of Toronto’s most preeminent B-boys, UNITY has reached over 100,000 youth across Canada using powerful messaging integrated with urban art forms to engage students and ultimately inspire them to find their voice amongst their peers and their community when dealing with issues such as bullying, violence, school life and cultural issues.
