Sean Paul Talks About Hypocrite!

Hypocrites are always in our midst.  They are the people who pretend to live a good life, pretend to be moral, have principle, or pretend to wish people well, but behind closed doors, they don’t live a good life, they are immoral with no principal and don’t wish people well.  In fact, hypocrites will tell you one thing, but do something else.

Dancehall has a new anthem where “Hypocrite” are concerned and it comes courtesy of Sean Paul!  Teaming with Andre Gray and his brother Jason Henriques Misik Muzik / Dutty Rock co-production), Dutty Yeah (aka Sean Paul) wastes no time letting you know the movements of a hypocrite.

Sampling Dancehall legend Bounty Killer who issues a stern warning that ‘nuff gwaan like dem ah friend yuh see,’ the tump of the beat and drum pattern act like a constant knock to your head saying ‘you can’t trust people.’  By the time we get to the 20 second marker, we accept whatever’s coming as truth.

At 98 BPM Sean Paul sing-jays:  “dem ah nuh yuh friend / dem ah friend enemy / dem ah pose up / but dem ah wanna-be / dem ah gwaan like / dem would deh deh P / anything ah jump off / dem ah fled yuh see / can see dem when dih trouble it ah knock / but dem surface when dih girls dem ah flock / can see dem when yuh pocket turn flat / but dem waan sekkle when dih bank book shat….”  K-A-B-O-O-M!

What true lovers of Dancehall will appreciate is Sean’s return to authentic Dancehall – not a lot of instrumentation, but a lot of drum and 808 kick!  Check the link and make sure you tell SP what you think >>> @duttypaul

Shaggy, Super Cat & Maxi Priest Make it a Night Flight!

Traveling as much as you do, you know that daytime travel is hectic; families with crying children want to get to their destination faster (and sometimes to the annoyance of fellow travelers), people talking on their phone at volumes that are offensive, and, airport staff are irritable because they have to deal with stressed out passengers which combined makes daytime travel hard, until you take a “Night Flight!”

Evening travel means less traffic, a relaxed experience, and most times going to an exotic destination with your honey according to Shaggy, Maxi Priest and Super Cat!

Super Cat Sing-Jays:  “I say the Dada have to leave her pon a late flight / a late flight / pon a late flight / fih go ram dih Reggae music Dancehall til it ram tight / ram tight / till it ram tight / and mih movin like a jack and mih tell yuh inna dih dark night / dih dark night / inna dih dark night / sippin on some Chardonay ….”

This HOTTT new Lover’s Rock chune is set at 90 BPM and has a groove that you can’t help but sway to as you look your lover in the eye while drinking wine.  Produced by Sting International Productions, and with contributions from Sly & Robbie and Lenky Marsden, this is a definite must add to your playlist, but only if you’re a Lover!

P.S.  This song is track 17 on Shaggy’s album Out of Many One Music XL Edition which has been nominated for the 2015 Grammy for Best Reggae Album.  Make sure you buy the track on iTunes

Sound System Culture Profiled in Documentary - Huddersfield, UK!

Host DJ David Katz is proud to present a special screening of Mandeep Samra’s documentary film ‘Sound System Culture’, celebrating the sound systems of Huddersfield. followed by DJ sets from Al Fingers, the London-based DJ, producer, author and book
publisher, alongside the night’s regular host, David Katz, playing roots reggae and foundation dancehall, original vinyl style. The mass immigration of Jamaicans in the 1950s and 60s brought the culture of the sound system to the UK, where it made a dramatic impact in unexpected places. The film Sound System Culture thus charts the untold history of reggae music and sound systems in the northern town of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. The town hosted many of the biggest names in reggae music, including singers, bands, and sound systems, throughout the 1970s and ‘80s. Many artists would insist on playing at Huddersfield’s Venn Street when arranging a UK tour, due to the size of the crowd in attendance and the legendary northern hospitality. The documentary revisits an era when Jamaicans played their music at dances in the Venn Street nightclub, which helped put Huddersfield on the British reggae map.

The film screening will begin at 8pm sharp (running time: 35 minutes), followed by DJ sets until midnight. We expect another packed house for this event so come early to avoid disappointment! http://soundsystemculturehuddersfield.tumblr.com /http://www.alfingers.com/ http://www.facebook.com/dubmealways

Reggae and Rock n Roll in India!

All-girl band The Void is set to take the live music scene in Bengaluru by storm with their Reggae Rock sound

This article first appeared in The Bangalore Mirror

In a male dominated live music space, four girls have set out to change the way things work, all while trying to play a genre that we have seldom heard of in the indoe music scene in India – Reggae Rock.  Formed in January, The Void comprises of Vinaya (lead guitarist), Anagha (vocalist), Rithika (rhythm guitarist) and Suvarna (drummer).  While three of them are pursuing their BA at Mount Carmel College, Survarna is a final year law student at KLE in Rajajinagar.

It was during a sports session at their college that Rithika suggested that the girls put a band together considering their common love for music.  It took a while to figure out the line-up (their first drummer quit early on) but since Suvarna, their current drummer, joined them, the girls have been on a roll.  “In a largely male-dominated music scenario, the all-girl tag is interesting and often we see ourselves being underestimated.  Plus, the crowd never expects us to play rock covers,” Survana says.  Their set list comprises five originals (“Free,” “Rag Doll,” “Two in the Making” etc) and covers such as “Skyfall,” “Titanium” and “Freedom.”  Their range varies from Rock, Alternative, Slow, Punk and Reggae.

Not wanting to be slotted into any category, Anagha says “Since we are new, we are experimenting with different genres.  We like Reggae as well as Rock and we figured we’d combine the two.  Also, we haven’t come across any other band that plays this sound.”  While this definitely makes theor act unique, it also leaves them vulnerable to closer scrutiny.  Considering the fact that they only found their footing a few months ago (their “first proper show” was in August), The Void has the potential to become an act worthy of headlining a festival.  So far, the band counts their Independence day performance at Koramangala restobar Gilly’s as their best gig.  “It was pretty exciting because we played our first few songs in front of a crowd for half an hour.  We loved every moment on stage,” Rithika says.

Given that the band members are aged between 19 and 21, its no surprise that their biggest challenge has been working around curfews set by their concerned parents.  So far, they have managed to tackle this problem by requesting for earlier slots, but they are still in the process of convincing parents to let them play a little later as well!

Details About the 2015 Grammy Nominees for Reggae Album of the Year!

Reggae and Dancehall are the two most enjoyed genres in the world, and today, the Grammy committee has announced the Nominees for Best Reggae Recording, 2015.

The nominees are:

Ziggy Marley – Fly Rasta

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry – Back At the Controls

Sean Paul – Full Frequency

Shaggy – Out of Many One Music

Sly & Robbie and Spicy Chocolate – The Reggae Power

SOJA – Amid The Noise and the Haste

Ziggy Marley still uses the standard set by his Father, Bob Marley, when it comes to producing good music, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry is not afraid to be himself which comes through in the unique music he makes.  Sean Paul understands the power of a single frequency, not to mention what happens to the masses when they get full frequency (he chose the right title for his album).

Shaggy single handedly brought nations of people together, and the true intentions of his heart were revealed when this album was made.  Not only is he the hardest working man in our business, he is one of the hardest working in music and entertainment, and always creates opportunities for others.  Tessanne is just ONE of many.

Sly & Robbie never cease to amaze with their work ethic and work habits.  They operate as if they have nothing and the project they are working on (currently) means everything to them.  In other words, despite the many Grammy’s they’ve won in the past, despite the amount of world tours they’ve been on, they act as if all of it is happening again, but for the first time.  This is so humbling.

SOJA are the newest kids on the Reggae block!  They are well known on the West Coast of the US, but they are from Arlington, VA, just across the Potomac River.   The amount of their fans is equivalent to the amount of grains of sand found on a beach in Montego Bay … they have a lot!

Good luck to all the nominees!

Gully Bop aka Country Man – Body Specialist!

By now you’ve heard about the success story of Gully Bop aka Country Man.  Thanks to you being on Instagram, Gully’s video went viral with people LOVING his freestyle he performed for the camera.  A few people decided to find the talented artist and put him in the studio!  Kaboom!

Ricardo 'RedBoom' Reid found the right hybrid riddim that compliments’ Country Man’s voice.  His first studio release, “Body Specialist,” is a perfect blend between old school Dancehall (Tiger, Ninjaman, Shabba) and new school production.  In fact, the riddim is so appropriate that Country Man is able to deliver his lyrics with perfect timing and shows the fact that though he may have been homeless, he is in precise physical shape.

The artist sings:  “dem know me as the body specialist / when yuh body bruk down check me wid it / boom / dem know me as a body specialist / when yuh body bruk down check me wid it / pure body sick from 1986 / 2014 you ah check me wid it / all fih yur body want a new gear stick / and if yuh body tired gyal mih give yuh til yuh criss….”  Trouble!

Both Raw and Radio versions available at the links below!

P.S.  Big up Laing and his support of Country Man who will be performing at Sting 2014!

Toronto Artists for Christmas

Around the world, Canada is known as being a peace keeping nation.  We (I am a proud Canadian) have been very active in missions such as the 1956 United Nations Emergency Force to the 2009 African Union Hybrid Operation in Dafur.  Peace is just a Canadian thing.

Today, CVS Records and Fizzle Productions is proud to continue the peace keeping mission of Canada, except they are doing it in a musical way with the release of the song “It’s Christmas” by a collective called Toronto Artists for Christmas.  With contributions by Fyahnese (Fiyah-neze), Devon Irie, Melisa Rose, Norval Edgehill, Eyesus, Kafinal, Faze, Chrisco, G Moralis, Tonya P, Sweetsapp, Keri French, Tristan 5-Star and Simply K, the world experiences a special message from some of Toronto’s elite.

Extending a branch of peace, the artists sing “on the first day of Christmas a June love come to me / she bring me / one dozen rose and / one diamond ring and lots of hugging and kissing / what she bring to me / one dozen rose and / one diamond ring and / lots of hugging and kissing / this year Christmas catch me inna foreign / this ya year me haffi send down a barrel / mama bake bare cake and make sorrel / Christmas time feels sweet inna foreign ….”

Who doesn’t remember having to send down a barrel for Christmas or even New Years?!  What about buying clothes and shoes for the kids and praying everything still fits by the time the barrel reach?!  Oh yes!

For the Christmas season (not just this year but all years to come), this is the chune to play, “It’s Christmas” by Toronto Artists for Christmas.  Make sure you tell CVS Records and Fizzle Productions what you think via Twitter >>> @fazefizzle
